WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today spoke from the House floor in favor of and then voted for the Assault Weapons Ban Act, which restores and updates the prior assault weapons ban that kept weapons of war out of our communities for a decade before Republicans opposed its renewal.
The vote on passage was 217 to 213.
In his floor remarks, Congressman Cohen said in part:
"The cumulative debate from the Republican side has been members who have wanted to show their…intimate knowledge of weapons, their almost fetishism with weapons…The AR-15 is the outgrowth of a military weapon that was designed for military use… I urge passage of the bill."
