Congressman Cohen Votes to Authorize Subpoena for Whitaker

February 7, 2019

Acting Attorney General to testify before Judiciary Committee Friday

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) voted today to authorize the Judiciary Committee to subpoena Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker if he fails to appear or refuses to answer questions at a scheduled oversight hearing on Friday. The committee approved a resolution to authorize the subpoena by a vote of 23 to 13.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I expect the Acting Attorney General to appear before the committee on Friday and answer our questions but our past experience with former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and others not answering our questions made it prudent to authorize a subpoena, in case it becomes necessary.

"Congress has a duty to get answers and, if necessary, to compel testimony from uncooperative witnesses."
