Congressman Cohen Votes to Remove Speaker McCarthy

Historic vote to vacate the speaker’s chair
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen, whose first vote in Congress, in 2007, helped elect Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House of Representatives, today took a historic vote to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.
The vote to vacate the Speaker’s chair was 216 to 210.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“Unfortunately, Kevin McCarthy does not have any good will nor did he establish any confidence among the Democratic caucus. There have been too many instances of misdeeds, untruths, and weakness in defending democracy.”
Congressman Cohen voted for Hakeem Jeffries of New York for Speaker in January. Jeffries is now the Minority Leader.
This is the first time in the history of the United States that a motion to vacate the speakership has been successful. The last time the House voted to on a motion to vacate the Speaker’s chair, in 1910, was unsuccessful.
