Congressman Cohen Votes to Restore U.S. Mail Service

August 22, 2020

Delivering for America Act reverses Trump Administration disruptions

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today returned to Washington and voted for the Delivering for America Act to restore normal operations and confidence in the U.S. Postal Service. This is in response to the Trump Administration efforts to dismantle postal infrastructure and to delay deliveries of vital shipments during a pandemic and before large scale mail-in voting for the November Presidential election is set to occur. The vote on passage was 257 to 150.

Before the vote, Congressman Cohen spoke from the House floor, noting that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told a Senate Committee Friday that he did not intend to restore the postal processing machinery that he has had removed. Congressman Cohen said:

"He reduced efficiency. He reduced the ability of the post office to deliver ballots to elect a person safely in America. This is a shame and it's a crime."

Earlier this week, Congressman Cohen held a press conference with postal workers outside The Kenneth T. Whalum Sr. Post Office, Memphis' main post office. He also wrote to Postmaster General DeJoy, expressing his concern about the recent disruption and delay of mail delivery and asking that postal sorting machines removed from local facilities be restored to service.
