Congressman Cohen Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling in DACA Case

Trump Administration violated law in terminating program
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court ruling rejecting the Trump Administration's effort to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program shielding those brought to this country as children from being deported. The court ruled that the Trump Administration was arbitrary and capricious when it suddenly ended the program.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
"Eight years ago, President Obama showed compassion for individuals brought to this country as children and who know no other home. Dreamers are part of the fabric of America and deserve to be treated with dignity, not deported. I welcome Chief Justice John Roberts thoughtful ruling recognized the impact of this DACA program and insisted – as required by law -- that when making these types of decisions the government act deliberately, transparently, and fully consider the policy's effects. I hope that Congress finally address comprehensive immigration reform and provide some certainty and permanence to our immigration policies."
Congressman Cohen was an original cosponsor of H.R. 6, The American Dream and Promise Act, which passed the House on June 4 of last year. This bill would provide Dreamers with a path to citizenship and protect them from deportation. It awaits consideration in the Senate.
