Congressman Cohen’s Statement After Voting “No” on Continuing Budget Resolution

March 11, 2025

Will result in billions of dollars in cuts to social safety net programs like Medicaid and SNAP

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today vote “no” on a Continuing Resolution for federal funding through September 30 that passed on a 217 to 213 vote, and made the following statement:

“This was a horrific continuing resolution providing Trump and Musk a free hand in the continued dismantling of the federal government and the safety net programs people in my district rely on to live, like Medicaid (TennCare) and SNAP. It fails to protect Medicare or Social Security that we know they have plans to rob to further enrich millionaires and billionaires with tax cuts. It cuts veterans benefits, leaves tens of thousands without access to food assistance, and slashes health care research. It does not include community project funding. There is a better way to avoid a government shutdown but Republicans decided to abandon negotiations. As Friday’s deadline looms, it is worth remembering that the last time we had a federal government shutdown, Trump was in office. Republicans can’t legislate or govern and they’re putting us on a dangerous path to failure and hardship.”
