Congressmen Cohen and Wilson to Introduce Resolution Condemning Vladimir Putin and Russia’s Electoral Irregularities as Putin’s Reign Continues

Sham election casts doubt on legitimacy of the weekend’s results
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Ranking Member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), and the Commission’s Chairman Joe Wilson (SC-2), plan to introduce a resolution Tuesday expressing the sense of Congress that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not be recognized by the United States beyond May 7, 2024.
The resolution states that Putin’s 2020 elections involving a constitutional amendment that waived term limits for him were “marked by widespread reports of organized voter coercion, multiple voting, ballot-stuffing, and violation of the secrecy of the ballot.” These irregularities make his continuation in office after May 7, 2024, illegitimate.
It also notes that Russia “is bound by international commitments with regard to human rights and the rule of law,” and has violated those commitments. These violations include Putin’s incarceration of Alexei Navalny, one of his strongest opposition figures, who later “died under unknown but highly suspicious circumstances” in February.
It resolves that any attempt by Putin to remain in office beyond May 7 would be “illegitimate” and would not be recognized by the United States.
