Congressmen Cohen and Wilson Introduce Resolution to Remove Russia from the United Nations Security Council

Russia’s presence violates “the purposes and principles” of the U.N. Charter
WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen of Tennessee and Joe Wilson of South Carolina, the Co-Chairman and Ranking Member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission, today introduced a resolution making the finding that, in light of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of and ongoing war against Ukraine, Russia’s presence on the United Nations Security Council “violates the purposes and principles of the United Nations.”
The resolution calls on Congress to find “that the Russian Federation has repeatedly, deliberately, and flagrantly violated the purposes and principles of the United Nations.” The resolution also urges President Biden to direct “the Department of State and other relevant Federal departments and agencies to pursue all appropriate steps with Allies, partners, and other countries to limit, suspend, or terminate rights and privileges that the Russian Federation exercises in the Security Council of the United Nations under (the) United Nations Charter.”

On October 12, Congressmen Cohen and Wilson sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging him to initiate a process to replace Russia on the UN Security Council as the fifth permanent member. The resolution is a continuation of these efforts.
