Ranking Member Cohen Calls on Attorney General Sessions to Resign

March 2, 2017

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] — Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, today called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign amid reports that he may have lied under oath during his confirmation process about his having met twice with the Russian Ambassador while acting as a surrogate for the Trump campaign during the 2016 Presidential campaign . During his confirmation hearing in January 2017, then-Senator Sessions said under oath, "I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians."

"Attorney General Sessions must resign," said Congressman Cohen. "Then-Senator Sessions, who was a surrogate for candidate Donald Trump, lied under oath during his confirmation hearing about meeting with the Russian Ambassador during the Presidential campaign. Attorney General Sessions claims to have some wiggle room, but the Attorney General must be, like Caesar's wife, above suspicion. Wiggle room is not acceptable. Therefore, Attorney General Sessions cannot effectively do his job, which includes overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's attempts to influence our elections."
