$1 Million+ Awarded To St. Jude and the University of Memphis

July 22, 2009
“This is incredibly good news, and just demonstrates that Memphis is on the front lines of medical and scientific research,” Congressman Cohen said. “Whether it’s finding a cure to a disease that affects people of all ages, or advancing our understanding of the environment, these funds will also have the effect of retaining some of the best and brightest scientific minds in our district.”

St. Jude was awarded two grants totaling $714,000 from HHS. To help advance the medical understanding of T-cells, the Research Hospital will receive $420,000, and $294,000 to study the immunobiology of MINA53.

NSF has awarded the University of Memphis $312,506 in American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funds to study the effects of global climate change. Funding for the project will available August 1.

Congressman Cohen voted for the ARRA earlier this year. To date, the Ninth District has received more than $376 million in federal funding from direct grants and the Recovery Act. To see how these funds are being used, Congressman Cohen created a funding map to track the infusion of funding to the district. It can be viewed at cohen.house.gov.
