$3.1 Million In Federal Funding Announced for Ninth District

“Recovery Act funds are making a real difference in funding right here in the Ninth District. The Ninth District’s colleges and hospitals are on the front lines of conducting lifesaving medical and scientific research that can impact our quality of life. Recovery Act funding is making a real difference and have helped to make the Ninth District a world-class research center that helps to attract the best and brightest scientific and medical professionals from around the country and the world,” Congressman Cohen said.
The majority of the funding, $1,431,813 was awarded to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) - the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research, which consists of 27 institutes and centers.
St. Jude Research Hospital was awarded three grants from NIH totally $412,583 to conduct medical research to advance the understanding of certain cell disorders and diabetes.
The University of Memphis was three grants totally $1,126,358 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to undertake human computer research, environmental research affecting birds, and advanced cellular research. The NSF also awarded $498,424 to UT-Health Science Center to undertake a study of UV light and its affect on the endocrine system.
