Celebrating Elvis Presley's 75th Birthday
January 8, 2010
“I was honored to join Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley at Graceland today to celebrate Elvis’ birthday, and on behalf of the Ninth Congressional District, declare today ‘Elvis Presley Day.’
“Elvis Presley represents the very best of Memphis and remains one of the greatest entertainers and musical talents ever. His contributions to music have enriched not only our nation’s rich cultural heritage but the lives of people all over the world – as I saw first-hand during my trip to South Africa last year.
“As a young man, Elvis made me feel proud to be a Memphian. When I was in second grade, I impersonated Elvis as part of the Idlewild Spring Production. Elvis’ cousin, Beecher Smith, played the role of Ed Sullivan.
“Elvis is as vital today as he was on the Ed Sullivan Show, Steve Allen Show, after his return from the Army, and his comeback special. He is still the King.”
