Cohen and Wharton Announce Federal Funding for Shelby County YouthBuild Program
“YouthBuild is an incredible program that not only provides young people with real skills but also deserving families with a home. This is the kind of organization that makes a real difference in our community and has an enormous impact on the life of a young person,” Congressman Cohen said. “I was proud to vote for the ARRA that made this program possible. I commend all those who are involved with YouthBuild and will do all that I can to make sure that this program can continue to make a difference for a long time to come.”
“Grant funding for YouthBuild programs in Memphis and Shelby County is precisely the type of financial intervention needed to reinvigorate our local economy. In addition to providing job and life skills training to at-risk youth, YouthBuild makes a number of positive impacts in areas such as housing, post-secondary education and high school graduation rates. Having a comprehensive program with such a wide wingspan is a tremendous benefit and I look forward to it building on its reputation of success in our community.” Shelby County Mayor A.C. Wharton said.
Today’s grant award is the first installment of funding for the program. In total, the county will receive more than $1 million over two-years. The second grant totaling $927,844 will be made in the future, pending the availability of federal funds. Congressman Cohen has vowed to fight to make sure Shelby County gets the full award.
YouthBuild in Shelby County partners with many Shelby County organizations, including Memphis City Schools, Carpenter’s Local #345, the Shelby County Division of Corrections, and Habit for Humanity. Those who enroll in the program are provided with job training and educational opportunities that allow them to earn their GED or high school diploma and prepare for college or other post-secondary training opportunities.
Participants put their classroom knowledge to work by helping to construct or rehabilitate affordable housing for low-income or homeless families in their own neighborhoods. Carpenter’s Union #345 offers apprenticeships to those who complete the construction course.
In addition, YouthBuild includes significant support systems, such as a mentoring, follow-up education, employment, and personal counseling services; and participation in community service and civic engagement.
According to YouthBuild’s grant application, over 50 percent of the participants will attain a GED or diploma and over 45 percent will enroll in post-secondary education or employment.
