Cohen Announces $1.8 Million to Help Memphis-area Infants and Toddlers
[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that Porter-Leath has been awarded a $1,847,044 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support Early Head Start (EHS) Partnerships, part of President Obama’s Early Learning Initiative. This grant will be used to create and expand learning opportunities for infants and toddlers, providing comprehensive services like developmental and behavioral screenings as well as professional development for teachers and helping to increase parental engagement.
“This funding is an investment in our children, an investment in our families, and an investment in our future,” said Congressman Cohen. “We will see countless benefits of this funding down the line as today’s children grow into tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, doctors, scientists, and productive members of our society. This is an important program that I am proud to support.”
EHS was started to assist low income families by providing family-centered services to promote child development and enable parents to fulfill their roles while moving toward self-sufficiency. To that end, EHS promotes positive parent-child interactions, ensures formal linkages among federal, state, and local services that service infants and toddlers.
