Cohen Announces $2.25 Million in Funding to Help Shelby County Recover from Severe March Storms

July 8, 2014

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $2,247,757.18 in funding to the State of Tennessee to help Shelby Country recover from March’s severe winter storms and repair electrical distribution systems. This funding follows President Obama’s April 11 Major Disaster Declaration for the State of Tennessee. Before the President issued the declaration, Congressman Cohen joined members of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation in calling on the President to approve the state’s request and make affected areas eligible for recovery assistance.

“The severe winter storms that we experienced in March caused severe damage to our community, and many throughout Memphis and Shelby County still need help recovering,” said Congressman Cohen. “I am pleased that President Obama acted quickly on our request to approve recovery assistance and that our community is now receiving some of the resources we need to repair the damage and rebuild.”

This funding will help the region offset costs associated with replacing and repairing damaged components of the electrical distribution system as a result of impacts from March’s Severe Winter Storms. It is being provided under authority of Section 407 of the Robert T. Stafford Act. Congressman Cohen is also working to ensure that victims of last week’s flooding receive recovery assistance if such assistance is available.
