WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Memphis $292,294 for biological research related to deafness and communicative disorders. The new federal funds will be distributed through the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

“The University of Memphis is known nationwide for its outstanding research programs,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will go a long way toward helping the hearing impaired and others who live with communicative disorders improve their quality of life.”

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders is one of the Institutes that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is the federal government’s focal point for the support of biomedical research. NIH’s mission is to provide research that would prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability.
