Cohen Announces $3 Million for Lead Hazard Reduction in Memphis
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the city of Memphis $3 million in Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration funds to perform lead hazard reduction activities and coordinate with community partners to educate, train and mitigate lead concerns in housing units. The program will evaluate 350 homes for lead paint hazards and eliminate lead hazards in 220 homes.
“Lead hazard is still a concern throughout Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “Lead is a dangerous poison that can have devastating effects on the human nervous system, especially among children. These new federal funds will help reduce the lead hazard in Memphis and protect families.”
HUD will partner with the Memphis Housing Authority, the Shelby County Health Department, the Memphis Community Development Council and Faith Based Organizations to administer the program.
