WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital $324,000 annually for five years for Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) <https://www.stjude.org/poe> from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The funds will be used for the Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) program, which is a nine to 11 week summer program for college students or graduates interested in medicine, biomedical sciences, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, or public health who want to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Fifty American students are accepted each year to practice what they have learned in a laboratory or clinical setting at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Of the 11 agencies that compose the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health. NCI “conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.”
