Cohen Announces $370K for University of Tennessee Health Science Center
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center was awarded $370,000 for heart and vascular research by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
“The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is known across the country and world for its quality care and research,” said Congressman Cohen. “We all know someone who suffers from heart disease. These new federal funds will enable the University to continue to search for a cure for this terrible illness.”
The new funds will be used to study regulatory mechanisms of oxidative stress in hypertensive heart disease. Heart disease is currently the leading cause of death in the United States. Further research into the relationship between oxidative stress and hypertension may assist scientists in reducing risk for the disease. NHLBI provides research, education and training programs to advance the prevention and treatment of heart, lung and blood diseases.
