May 31, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center $370,000 for glaucoma research. The new federal funds will be distributed by the National Eye Institute (NEI).

“The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has one of the best glaucoma medical research programs in the country,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will help ensure Health Science Center doctors, scientists and researchers continue to provide Memphis and our region with the best research and care possible when it comes to understanding and treating glaucoma.”

As part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), NEI’s mission is to “conduct and support research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to blinding eye diseases, visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, and the special health problems and requirements of the blind.”
