Cohen Announces $499K for Memphis School-Based Health Centers

July 19, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Memphis City Schools $499,167 for school-based health center programs.

“School-based health centers help keep our children healthy and help make them better students,” said Congressman Cohen. “A healthy child is a happy child, and a happy child is one that is willing to learn. These new federal funds will help working parents get their children the health care they need and enable our students to achieve more in the classroom.”

The Affordable Care Act appropriated a total of $200 million for 2010 through 2013 for the School-Based Health Center Capital Program to address capital needs in school-based health centers. The new federal funds are the first in the series of awards that will be made available to school-based health centers under the Affordable Care Act, which Congressman Cohen voted to support. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) administers the program. Click here to learn more about school-based health centers.
