Cohen Announces $500K in Federal Funds for University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis was awarded two federal grants worth more than $500,000 for research into oral, heart and vascular diseases.

“The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis is known across the country and the world for its outstanding research facilities,” said Congressman Cohen. “These funds will help us investigate the causes of and how best to prevent oral, heart and vascular diseases.”

The first grant – worth $135,202 – was awarded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for oral diseases and disorders research. The second grant – worth $370,000 – was awarded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for heart and vascular diseases research.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research was established to improve oral, dental and craniofacial health through research, research training and the dissemination of health information. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute was established to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung and blood diseases. Both centers are part of the National Institutes of Health, which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
