May 31, 2013

MEMPHIS, TN -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive over $430,000 in research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and that the Memphis Housing Authority will receive $69,000 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive $437,500 to develop a greater understanding of cellular mechanisms of positive symptoms of schizophrenia. The grant is provided through NIMH’s Mental Health Research Grants program.

“This grant will help doctors and scientists at St. Jude understand schizophrenia and advance the medical awareness of this chronic brain disorder which affects millions of people,” said Congressman Cohen.

The Memphis Housing Authority will receive $69,000 from HUD’s Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency Program (ROSS) to hire a program coordinator to link residents with training opportunities, job placement organizations, and local employers.

“Adequate job training is imperative to remaining competitive in today’s job market,” said Congressman Cohen. “The HUD grant will provide additional resources for the Memphis Housing Authority to better serve residents.”

The HUD Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency Program (ROSS) links public housing residents with supportive services and offers assistance in becoming economically self-sufficient.
