July 21, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Memphis International Airport $7,472,262 for new safety equipment, terminal building improvements, and taxiway expansion.

“These new federal funds will expand infrastructure, enhance security, and improve services for travelers and cargo operators at the world’s leading airport,” said Congressman Cohen. “As the economic engine of the Mid-South, it is crucial that Memphis International innovate and expand so it can maintain its position as the largest cargo airport in the world.”

The grant will provide enhanced passenger safety through new snow removal equipment, new airfield lighting, runway sensors, and perimeter fencing. Terminal rehabilitation includes the replacement of aging escalators, enhanced security throughout the facility, and new walkways for passengers between the parking garage and terminal.
