September 29, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a grant worth $820,577 for research projects to discover incidence and etiology of pneumonia in children. The new federal funding will be distributed by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

St. Jude continues to provide our children with the best care possible,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will give researchers and doctors at St. Jude the funding they need to study pneumonia and how best to combat the virus so our children can lead happy, healthy lives.

NCIRD supports research that prevents disease, disability and death through immunization and controlling respiratory diseases. NCIRD supports global and domestic efforts to aid at-risk populations with vaccines in order to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in children and adults. The Division of Bacterial and Viral Diseases is responsible for monitoring the spread of the infectious diseases, developing better diagnostic testing materials, providing local and state governments with assistance during outbreaks and supporting the distribution of life-saving vaccinations.
