Cohen Announces More Than $2.7 Million in Federal Funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

May 24, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the National Center for Research Sources has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital $2,772,027 to purchase a state-of-the-art MRI scanner for research into catastrophic diseases. The federal funds were made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“We must continue to do everything in our power to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as it continues to search for ways to treat and help our children,” said Congressman Cohen. “A new state-of-the-art MRI scanner will go a long way toward helping doctors and scientists at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital provide the best health care possible for our children.”

The state-of-the-art MRI scanner will be used to improve the lives of children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and HIV/AIDS. The research collected by the MRI will help doctors and scientists better understand the causes of disease, improve diagnosis and assessment of disease extent, and quantify side effects of treatment, which will all lead to increased survival and an improved quality of life for survivors.

The National Center for Research Resources is a part of the National Institutes of Health. The center provides laboratory scientists and clinical researchers with the tools and training they need to understand, detect, treat, and prevent a wide range of diseases.
