Cohen Announces More Than $285K for University of Memphis

September 29, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Education has awarded $289,121 to a program at the University of Memphis that helps children with disabilities.

“The University of Memphis has one of the best programs in the country when it comes to helping children with disabilities,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will give the University the tools it needs to help even more children.”

The new federal funds are designated for the Personnel Development to Improve Services and Results for Children with Disabilities Program, which helps states meet their responsibility for providing personnel to serve children with disabilities. The program supports competitive awards to: (1) help address state-identified needs for qualified personnel in special education, related services, early intervention, and regular education to work with children with disabilities; and (2) ensure that those personnel have the skills and knowledge that are needed to serve children with disabilities, and that such skills and knowledge are derived from practices determined to be successful through research and experience.

Program funds support projects in a variety of areas, including leadership personnel and personnel to serve children with low and high-incidence disabilities. The program also supports projects of national significance that address personnel issues with broad applicability.
