August 26, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center a grant worth $299,584 for research. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) will distribute the new federal funds for research in pharmacology, physiology, and biological chemistry.

The doctors and scientists at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center find cures and improve the quality of healthcare for millions in Memphis and across the country,” said Congressman Cohen. “This grant will allow those doctors and scientists to continue their research into pharmacology, physiology, and chemistry that helps save lives.

NIGMS is one of the agencies that make up the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIGMS’s mission is to “support research that increases understanding of life processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention.” The grant from NIGMS is part of the Academic Research Enhancement Awards program, which is designed to support meritorious research, strengthen the research environment of institutions, and expose students to research.
