Cohen Announces More Than $345K for University of Tennessee Health Science Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the University of Tennessee Health Science Center was awarded $348,400 for diabetes, endocrinology and metabolic research from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Memphis and Shelby County have some of the highest diabetes rates in the nation.

“The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has some of the best research facilities in the world,” said Congressman Cohen. “Memphis and Shelby County have some of the highest diabetes rates in the nation. These new federal funds will provide the University with the tools it needs to continue its work to find cures for diabetes and other devastating diseases.”

NIDDK is charged with conducting and supporting research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields, as well as many basic science disciplines. The Institute supports basic and clinical research through investigator-initiated grants, program project and center grants, and career development and training awards. NIDDK is a part of the National Institutes of Health – the nation’s medical research agency.
