Cohen Announces More Than $400,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

August 9, 2013

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in downtown Memphis was awarded $411,250 in grant funding to investigate the role of a specific protein in autoimmunity and the immune system. The grant comes through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ (HHS) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

“This funding will be used to continue important research at St. Jude, one of the world’s finest health care institutions,” said Congressman Cohen.

Proteins called cytokines are produced by cells of the immune system and regulate immune function. In this proposal, researchers will study a cytokine called interleukin 10 that generally limits inflammation and diseases associated with excessive inflammation, though may occasionally also promote immune responses.

Founded in 1962, St. Jude is one of the world’s leading children’s cancer research hospitals and is focused on finding cures and saving children from cancer and other deadly diseases.
