August 16, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a grant worth $437,500 for research into diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) will distribute the award.

St. Jude’s Research Hospital makes medical advances that greatly improve the quality of care in Memphis and beyond,” said Congressman Cohen. “The scientists and researchers at St. Jude find cures and save lives every day. This new funding will allow St. Jude to continue that important work.

NIDDK is one of the agencies that compose the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIDDK’s mission is to “support basic and clinical research through investigator-initiated grants, program project and center grants, and career development and training awards.” NIDDK research is divided into four divisions: Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases; Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases; and Extramural Activities. The Institute conducts research into diabetes, obesity, inborn errors of metabolism, endocrine disorders, mineral metabolism, digestive and liver diseases, nutrition, urology and renal disease, and hematology.
