Cohen Announces More Than $682K for Clinical Research Related to Neurological Disorders
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded two new federal grants worth more than $682,000 for clinical research related to neurological disorders. The first grant is worth $382,813 and has been awarded to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The second grant -- worth $300,000 – will go to Translational Sciences of Overton Park Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee.
“There are several medical labs throughout Memphis conducting vital research on neurological disorders,” said Congressman Cohen. “St. Jude and Translational Sciences are just two of those labs that are working to conduct important research that will help save lives in Memphis, Tennessee and across the country.”
The new federal funds are being distributed by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). As part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, NINDS’ mission is to “reduce the burden of neurological disease -- a burden borne by every age group, by every segment of society, by people all over the world.” This research will provide vital scientific research since “neurological disorders strike an estimated 50 million Americans each year, exacting an incalculable personal toll and an annual economic cost of hundreds of billions of dollars in medical expenses and lost productivity.”
