September 16, 2013

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that Shelby County has been awarded two grants totaling $997,334 for crime prevention and safety programs. This funding comes through the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).

“These funds will help ensure Shelby County law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to keep us safe and bring offenders to justice,” said Congressman Cohen.

Shelby County will receive a $797,334 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) from the DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Assistance. Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grants support a broad range of activities and law enforcement initiatives.

Shelby County will also receive $200,000 in funding for its Blueprint for Safety Demonstration project from the DOJ’s Office of Violence Against Women to help ensure swift consequences for domestic abuse, send a message of help and accountability, and reduce unintended consequences. The funding, which comes through the Grants to Encourage Arrest Policies and Enforcement of Protection Orders Program, will be used for the planning, implementation, and compliance evaluation phases of the project.
