Cohen Announces Nearly $8 Million in HUD Grants for Public Housing
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a combined $7,860,060 in grants to Memphis and Shelby County public housing agencies under its Capital Fund program.
"Increasing access to quality, affordable housing during these tough economic times is crucial for Memphis and Memphians," said Congressman Cohen. "This new federal funding will help the Memphis Housing Authority modernize its housing and improve the quality of life for many residents."
The grant award includes three grants totaling $7,671,276 for the Memphis Housing Authority, and a single $188,784 grant to the Shelby County Housing Authority. The Capital Fund program provides federal funds annually via a formula to approximately 3,100 public housing agencies (PHAs) across the country. PHAs may use Capital Fund grants for capital and management activities, including modernization and development of public housing.
