Cohen Announces Over $1.8 Million in Federal Funding for the University of Memphis

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Memphis and its faculty have been awarded a total of $1,838,172 in grant funding for four different projects. The funding announced today is from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

“This funding underscores the important role that University of Memphis scholars play in areas of national importance including science and education,” said Congressman Cohen. “It will also help the University of Memphis prepare 100 more young people each year for good-paying, 21st century jobs in the high-paying STEM fields that will keep our economy moving in the right direction.”

The following grant awards are included under today’s announcement:

  • U of M’s Alfred Hall was awarded $1,342,970 in grant funding from the NSF’s Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings to establish the Memphis Virtual STEM Academy at East High School. The Academy aims to help 100 Memphis high school students each year understand pre-engineering concepts and principles as well as develop an interest in and motivation to pursue advanced careers in the STEM fields: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
  • U of M’s Robert Kozma was awarded $428,744 in grant funding from the NSF’s Division of Mathematical Sciences to help improve mankind’s understanding of cognitive strategic change, or the ability of the brain to modify actions and action planning while maintaining an overarching goal.   • U of M’s Judith Simon was awarded $34,200 in grant funding from the NSF’s Division of Undergraduate Education to help diversify and increase the number of women in the cybersecurity workforce.
  • U of M’s Bob Smalley was awarded $32,258 in grant funding from the NSF’s Division of Polar Programs for a research project involving the Antarctic currents.
