Cohen Announces over $300k for UT Health Science Center
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded a grant worth $302,203 to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center for cancer treatment research. Specifically, the grant will go toward the study of cancer-fighting strategies targeting the Autotaxin-LPA Receptor Axis, which has been linked to cell proliferation and migration in cancerous tumors.
“Cancer is a scourge that claims tens of thousands of lives each year in Tennessee alone,” Congressman Cohen said. “The research conducted at the UT Health Science Center can help bring us closer to understanding how we can help save those lives.”
NCI was established by Congress in 1937 by the National Cancer Institute Act, and incorporated into the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1944. The NIH is one of 11 agencies composing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NCI coordinates the National Cancer Program, which conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.
