Cohen Attends Dinner Honoring Civil Rights Pioneer Julian Bond in NYC
MEMPHIS, TN – Yesterday evening, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) attended a dinner at the Plaza Hotel in New York City held to honor Civil Rights pioneer Julian Bond, who recently retired from his post as professor at the University of Virginia. The dinner kicked off an effort to endow a Civil Rights History Chair in his honor.
“Julian is a good friend and a Civil Rights pioneer who deserves recognition for his many accomplishments,” said Congressman Cohen. “It was a pleasure and an honor to attend a dinner recognizing Julian and helping such a good cause as the establishment of a Civil Rights History Chair in his honor at the University of Virginia.”

The event was co-chaired by Harry Belafonte and Dave Matthews. Others who attended the dinner honoring Julian Bond included BeBe Winans, Chrisette Michele, Jesse Jackson, Robin Roberts, Tonya Lewis Lee, Rita Dove, and Hank Aaron. Masters of Ceremonies were Wanda Sykes and Chris Tucker.
