Cohen Awards Special Agent Harold Hurley with Congressional Badge of Bravery for Helping Save Family from Burning Car

April 20, 2015

[MEMPHIS, TN] – This afternoon, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) awarded Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Harold Hurley with a Congressional Badge of Bravery for his efforts saving a woman and her four children from a burning vehicle in Memphis. Without the actions of Special Agent Hurley, who assisted in removing the children from the vehicle before running back to help the mother, her family could have been trapped in the truck as it burned. United States Attorney Edward Stanton III presented a certificate and delivered remarks and praise. A photo of the Congressman presenting this badge is available here.

“Special Agent Hurley went above and beyond the call of duty to rescue a family in Memphis from a burning vehicle,” said Congressman Cohen. “Without his courage and quick thinking, they could have been gravely injured or even killed. His actions are worthy of a Congressional Badge of Bravery, and I am pleased to join U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton to present him with one today.”

While driving to work on December 2nd, 2013, Special Agent Hurley observed a fire in the bed of a nearby truck and attempted to alert the driver. The driver had not realized her truck was in flames, and upon being alerted pulled over. Special Agent Hurley then proceeded to move past the fire and assist in removing the children from the vehicle, ultimately making two separate trips to the truck which by the end of the rescue was completely engulfed in flames. Special Agent Hurley is a former Ninth Congressional District resident who currently resides in Macon, Georgia.
