Cohen Celebrates Women's History Month

March 4, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today released the following statement recognizing Women's History Month, which is celebrated throughout the month of March:

"This month we celebrate the many contributions and accomplishments of the women who make history and who have helped make this such a great country. Women have contributed so much to the development of our nation.

Whether through their work in the arts, public service, science and technology, law, medicine, business or the media, women have made countless valuable contributions to the success of America. That is why I sponsored legislation in the Tennessee State Senate to create the Tennessee Women's Suffrage Commission. Today a bas relief sculpture by Nashville artist Alan LeQuire honoring Tennessee's pivotal role in women getting the right to vote is permanently displayed outside the General Assembly's chambers in the State Capitol.

We should join together and recognize the efforts that we've all enjoyed on behalf of remarkable women who have helped shape our great nation including Ida B. Wells, Shirley Chisholm, Maxine Smith, Michelle Obama, and Nancy Pelosi."
