Cohen Highlights Decreased Homelessness Rates in Memphis

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today highlighted the progress made combatting homelessness in the Memphis area, which has now declined for each of the last two years. The Congressman made his remarks at a news conference with Mayor A C Wharton, Community Alliance for the Homeless Executive Director Katie Kitchin and several other local officials. Congressman Cohen announced more than $150,000 in federal funding for the Alliance last year.

“Today marks a major step forward for Memphis in proving that we are committed to reducing homelessness,” said Congressman Cohen. “It is important for a nation as wealthy as ours to care for those who are less fortunate. Although we are still recovering from the Great Recession, we must continue to focus substantial resources towards eliminating homelessness and do all that we can to provide adequate shelter for those who need it. I will continue to support legislation and funding to assist those who are less fortunate.”

According to the Community Alliance for the Homeless’ annual Point In Time survey, homelessness in Shelby County is down 21% overall since 2012. Family homelessness also dropped 30% while chronic homelessness fell by 39% during the same period.
