Cohen Hosts Workshop on Federal Funding, Appropriations, and Grants

November 4, 2010

MEMPHIS, TENN. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today hosted a federal appropriations requests workshop for Memphis groups at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. The Congressman, who has a strong record of bringing federal funds back to the 9th Congressional District, hosted the forum to help non-profit and local government agencies recognize and understand the many channels for new federal funding.

“There are numerous federal agencies willing to help Memphis groups with funding,” said Congressman Cohen. “Today’s workshop was held to help groups throughout Memphis recognize which federal agencies can help and what steps to follow to increase their chances of getting funded.”

The workshop – which was conducted by Congressman Cohen and his staff – gave details on what federal agencies provide funding and what services they fund. A large segment of the seminar focused on the application process, compliance, and reporting. Overall information on the grants and appropriations process, contracts and funding formulas were also discussed.

Representatives from the University of Memphis, Southwest Tennessee Community College, the National Civil Rights Museum, and BRIDGES, Inc. also shared their experiences working with the federal government to secure funding for a wide variety of projects. A good source of the federal grants process can be found at www.grants.gov
