Cohen: Memphis Homeless to Receive Millions in New Federal Assistance
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded several groups throughout Memphis – including city and county government – with millions of dollars in new federal funds to help the homeless.
“Memphis has far too many people living on the streets,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will help give the homeless in Memphis and Shelby County the tools they need to secure permanent housing, secure jobs, and help them become productive members of society.”
The new federal funds were made available through HUD’s Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance competitive program, which provides funding for a wide range of assistance to the homeless, including transitional housing, permanent housing and a variety of supportive services.
Below are the groups that received the new federal funds, and the amounts they received:

- Catholic Charities, Inc. -- $1,242,422
- City of Memphis -- $646,512
- Cocaine & Alcohol Awareness Program, Inc. -- $168,748
- Community Alliance for the Homeless -- $137,742
- Door of Hope, Inc. -- $158,237
- Frayser Millington North Shelby Mental Health Center, Inc. -- $217,500
- Memphis Family Shelter -- $197,886
- Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association -- $643,296
- Shelby County Government -- $228,782
- The Salvation Army -- $385,192
