Cohen Pleased U.S. Attorney & FBI to Monitor November Election in Shelby County
MEMPHIS, TN – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today applauded the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for agreeing to monitor possible election fraud and voting rights abuses in Shelby County for the upcoming November 6 election. In September, Congressman Cohen sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder requesting federal oversight of the Shelby County Election Commission to help ensure that it can properly administer the upcoming election this November.
“The Shelby County Election Commission has made far too many mistakes in the past,” said Congressman Cohen. “In all likelihood, the errors were due to sloppy record-keeping and incompetence – not malfeasance. However, voting is too important to be left in the hands of those with such a poor track record. I’m pleased the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI are already on the ground in Shelby County to help ensure the integrity of the November 6 election.”
