Cohen Receives Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated-Memphis Chapter

June 5, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) this week received the 2012 Political Activist Award from the Phi Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at the sorority’s Annual Pink and Green Gala.

“It is an honor to receive the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s 2012 Political Activist Award and be recognized for my legislative work,” said Congressman Cohen. “The AKA’s have a strong history of political activism that has helped shape our community and surrounding region. We share common beliefs and goals for Memphis and I will continue to work with the illustrious Phi Lambda Omega Chapter as long as I am in Congress.”

Congressman Cohen was given the prestigious award largely because of his work with infant mortality, his sponsoring the Energy Independence and Security Act, his co-sponsoring the Reconnecting Homeless Youth Act, his advocating for a program that addresses Disproportional Share Hospital payments, and his work on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to give the National Institutes of Health an additional $10 billion to help fund hospitals like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Annual Pink and Green Gala is a yearly fundraiser that supports the sorority’s scholarship fund.
