Cohen Receives Friend of the National Parks Award
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today received the nonpartisan National Parks Conservation Association’s (NPCA) Friend of the National Parks Award in recognition of his voting record in the 113th Congress and his contributions to the protection and enhancement of America’s national parks. A photo of Congressman Cohen receiving this award, which he also received in the 112th and 111th Congresses, is available here.
“Our national parks are visited by tourists from around the world as well as millions of Americans each year,” said Congressman Cohen. “I am honored and humbled to be recognized for my efforts on behalf of national parks, which saw a record number of visitors in 2014. With the popularity of our national parks increasing, I will continue to make them a priority in Congress so that they can be enjoyed by generations to come.”
The Friend of the National Parks Award was established in 1999 to track and publicize congressional members’ votes on significant national park issues. This year, NPCA compiled votes for five national park-related votes in the House and Members had to vote correctly at least three out of five times in order to receive the award. Recipients of the award will receive a framed reproduction of a color poster of Everglades National Park in the style of the Works Progress Administration posters produced for the National Park Service in the 1930s.
“It’s an honor to recognize Congressman Cohen for supporting our national parks on the floor of the House during the 113th Congress,” said NPCA President and CEO Clark Bunting. “As the 114th Congress works on policies and funding levels impacting our national parks, I look forward to working with Congressman Cohen to ensure national parks have safe roadways, are well maintained, and have the resources they need to thrive for their upcoming centennial.”
