Cohen Receives Humane Champion Award For His Work to Protect Animals

April 3, 2014

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a longtime champion for animal rights and welfare, this week received the Humane Society’s “Humane Champion” award for his perfect voting record during 2013. The Congressman, who has received more “Humane Champion” awards than any other member of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation, also received extra credit on the Humane Scorecard for his sponsorship of the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act, which would end an abusive practice used by some horse trainers.

“It is a privilege and an honor to be recognized by the Humane Society for my long record of protecting animal welfare and preventing abuse,” said Congressman Cohen. “Our treatment of animals is a reflection of how we treat ourselves and each other, and I believe that we must do all that we can to do better on each front. The Humane Society’s efforts to protect animals are important to me and to all Memphians.”

By a large margin, Congressman Cohen received the highest grade awarded to a member of Tennessee’s Congressional Delegation on the Humane Society’s 2013 Humane Scorecard. He took the pro-animal position on all 9 bills scored this year, when no other member of the Tennessee House Delegation took the pro-animal position on more than 4 bills. His perfect score far exceeds the 21% average score of his fellow Tennesseans in the House.

The Humane Society’s Humane Scorecard is published annually to give Americans a snapshot of their legislator’s record on animal rights, animal welfare, and animal protection issues. The grades given are based on a Member’s sponsorship of pro-animal bills, key votes, and continued protection of major animal welfare laws.
