Cohen Receives Letter from EPA on 'Check Engine' Light Issue in Memphis

March 7, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) recently received a letter from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about the “check engine” light concerns in Memphis. The EPA letter is a follow-up to a letter Congressman Cohen sent to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson about the feedback he received throughout the City of Memphis that car inspection facilities are failing local vehicles due to illuminated “check engine” lights, causing motorists to spend their limited time and money before passing inspection.

“I appreciate EPA’s response and their clarification that the decision to implement this program in Memphis was made at the state level,” said Congressman Cohen. “While I am committed to protecting our environment and improving air quality, I have serious concerns with this program’s efficacy and its impact on hardworking Memphians. I am committed to remedying this unfortunate situation and vow to work with Governor Haslam and Administrator Jackson to find a solution to this growing problem.”
