Cohen Receives Perfect Voting Record from Environment America

April 28, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) was recognized by Environment America for having a perfect voting record on environmental issues in 2009. The Congressman was the only member of the Tennessee delegation to receive a perfect score.

“Our planet is the most precious resource we have, and it is vital that we do everything in our power to preserve our environment for future generations,” said Congressman Cohen. “If we are going to improve the air we breathe and the water we drink, we must combat the pollution that destroys our lungs and ruins our planet. Our efforts to maintain clean water and air will also enable us to create alternative sources of energy that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, lower energy costs for American families and small businesses, and establish a clean energy economy that will help create green jobs across the country.”

“Congressman Cohen has consistently voted to put the environment ahead of special interests. In the past year and a half, he successfully fought to invest an unprecedented $80 billion in clean energy and to protect more than two million acres of wilderness,” said Environment America’s Clean Energy Advocate, Sean Garren. “These scorecards are an important tool to educate the public about the voting records of their elected officials and to honor public officials like this that have a record of putting the environment first. We applaud Congressman Cohen for being a true champion for the environment. He was the only member of Congress from Tennessee to receive a 100 percent score for consistently voting to protect the environment, and we urge the other members of Tennessee’s delegation to join him in voting to safeguard our environment in the future.”

Congressman Cohen is the House sponsor of the 10 Million Solar Roofs and 10 Million Gallons of Solar Water Heating Act. The measure would provide valuable cash rebates for the creation of 10 million small power plants located on the roofs of American homes and businesses throughout the country. The legislation would also create an estimated 1.35 million direct and indirect jobs, lower energy costs, strengthen the economy, and put America on the path to energy independence.

Environment America is a federation of 28 state-based, citizen-funded environmental advocacy organizations. The group combines independent research, practical ideas, and tough-minded advocacy and organizing to overcome powerful special interests to win results for the environment. In addition to a 100 percent voter rating by Environment America, Congressman Cohen received commendation from the League of Conservation Voters for his perfect voting record.
