Cohen Speaks Out Against Republican Government Shutdown

October 1, 2013

[WASHINGTON, DC] – After House Republican leaders made good on their threat to shut down the federal government if their reckless, unreasonable, and irresponsible demands were not met, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) spoke out against the Republican’s manufactured, harmful, and unnecessary shutdown of our nation’s government. Video of the Congressman’s remarks is available here.

“Shutting down the government is wrong, it is bad for our economy, and it should not happen in America,” said Congressman Cohen. “More than ever, people need SNAP payments, they need Meals on Wheels, and they need the countless other services that our government provides. Republicans have said they care about the debt—but a government shutdown costs our country millions of dollars each day, all while citizens experience reduced government services. Instead of being willing to compromise, Republicans have shut down this government with their irresponsible, reckless, and purely ideological demands. I hope they come to their senses quickly and work in a bipartisan manner to get this country back up and running.”
