Cohen Statement on Bipartisan Agreement to End Government Shutdown and Avert Economic Shutdown
[WASHINGTON, DC] - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) made the following statement as Congress appeared to have reached an agreement to re-open the federal government and prevent the United States from defaulting on its debts. The Congressman also recorded a video statement regarding the agreement, which is available here.
“This agreement is good news for our country because it will re-open the government and prevent an economic catastrophe,” said Congressman Cohen. “For 17 days, I’ve eagerly awaited the opportunity to vote on consensus legislation to fund our government and I’m glad that opportunity has finally arrived. While I’m not pleased with everything in the agreement, it’s a relief that we will put our government back to work for the American people. I’m concerned about the damage that has been done to America’s reputation, as well as the shaken confidence in the dollar, but it is my hope that with today’s agreement both political parties can work together to repair our economy. Congress must refocus on a myriad of issues, from immigration to jobs to transportation and infrastructure and it’s time we get back to work on those important issues.
